What Is a Master Key System?
A master key system allows different keys to open designated locks while a master key opens multiple locks within that same system.
For example, tenants in an office building can each have a key that opens only their own suite. The property manager can carry one master key that opens all suites included in the system.
This gives authorized managers convenient access while keeping individual users’ access limited to their assigned spaces.
A Simple Example
Key holder Assigned access
Tenant A Suite A only
Tenant B Suite B only
Tenant C Suite C only
Property manager Suites A, B, and C
Larger systems can include department master keys and a grand master key for access across multiple groups of doors. Each level is planned around your building’s requirements.
A master key opens only the locks assigned to it within the system.

Fewer Keys. More Organized Access.
A properly designed master key system helps you:
-
Reduce the number of keys carried by owners and managers.
-
Assign access by employee, tenant, department, or building.
-
Limit access to offices, storage rooms, and other private areas.
-
Simplify authorized maintenance access.
-
Maintain clear records of doors and key assignments.
-
Plan for additional doors and changing access needs.
Master keys should be issued selectively and tracked carefully because a lost master key can affect several doors.
Restricted Key Systems for Greater Key Control
Knowing who has a key is an important part of managing your property. Standard keys can often be copied without the owner’s knowledge.
Restricted key systems provide greater control through limited key-blank distribution and authorization procedures for additional keys. The available protection depends on the product selected, its distribution controls, and any applicable patent protection.
How We Develop Your Key System
1. Review Your Property
We assess the doors, existing lock hardware, current keys, and any available keying records.
2. Identify Access Requirements
We work with you to determine who needs access to each door, including management, employees, tenants, and maintenance personnel.
3. Design the System
We recommend a keying structure and suitable products, considering compatibility, duplication controls, and future growth.
4. Install & Document
We install or rekey the necessary cylinders, verify key operation, and provide the agreed keying documentation.
5. Maintain the System
We help with authorized additional keys, rekeying, and system changes as your property evolves.
Commercial, Restricted & High-Security Key Systems
Huber Locksmiths services a wide range of commercial key systems, including Schlage, Medeco, BEST, Corbin Russwin, Sargent, Yale, Falcon, and Arrow.
We can help you evaluate standard commercial keys, interchangeable-core systems, restricted keyways, and high-security cylinders. Available services include master key system design, rekeying, cylinder replacement, and authorized additional keys.
Whether you need to simplify access or improve control over key duplication, we can recommend a system suited to your property and existing hardware.
Need Electronic Access Management?
Mechanical key systems provide practical access management for many properties. If you need access schedules, the ability to deactivate credentials, or entry records, electronic access control may be appropriate.
Huber Locksmiths can help you evaluate mechanical keys, electronic access control, or a combination of both.
